Wreckage in Birmingham after a war raid during The Blitz
Nov. 22, 1940 - London, England, U.K. - Salvaging the contents of a home wrecked in the 11-hour raid on Birmingham. Birmingham, as a major manufacturing centre, was an obvious target. Transport and telephone systems were badly affected but it was damage to the water system which caused the most urgent problem - firefighters had to rely on pumping water from the canals or leave some fires to burn themselves out
