Wrecked railway carriage after train crash, New Zealand

Dec. 12, 1953 - 160 Killed In New Zealand Railway Disaster: About 160 people are believed to have been killed following one of the worst-ever railway disasters in history in which a holiday train carrying Christmas travellers and people going to Auckland to see the queen, plunged into the flamed river near Waicuru, 170 miles from Wellington, on the north island of New Zealand. The accident occured when the train, consisting of six coaches was crossing a narrow guag bridge over the river. The concrete supports of the bridge, weaknd by floods, which had already raised the river 25 feet above its normal level, collapsed just after the engine reached the far side, dragging the train back into the river.
