Feb. 25 Wycombe Abbey School: An Art Class: A drawing lesson in the Art Room, where considerable freedom of artistic expression is allowed. Wycombe Abbey School in its Diamond Jubilee Year launches an appeal for 250, 000. One of the most famous of Girls Public Schools, Wycombe Abbey in Buckinghamshire, is launching an earnest Appeal for 250, 000 which like many other independent, unendowed schools it badly needs for additions, rebuilding, and to provide income for scholarships. It is an appropriate time, for 1956 is the Diamond Anniversary year of its foundation by that venerable Victorian, Dame Frances Dove DBE, JP, MA, the first headmistress, whose work for the school she created, until her retirement in 1910 is now commemorated in the school's fine Memorial library. The Abbey itself, chosen as the most suitable place for the fulfilment of her aims and ideals, and to which she came with a few pupils from St. Leonards in Scotland in 1896, has a long history. Once the home of Lord Shelburne, Prime Minister in 1783, is was then known as Loakes Manor. Dr Johnson was a visitor. Boswell describes a party when Franklin demonstrated how oil could calm storm water using a stream in the grounds. John Wesley records his impressions of the beauty of the surrounds. Resigned by James Wyatt for Lord Carrington, its name was changed to Wycombe Abbey. William Pitt, Disraeli, Gladstone, and Rosebery stayed there. During the last war, at short notice the school was requisitioned for the USAAF which necessitated the school splitting up, not to be brought together again at Wycombe until 1946. Today, there is a long waiting list. The school is full and thriving but the pathetic story of the modern world, lacking the finance to ensure safely the continuance of its worthy ideals and traditions
