Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo, Japan
1975 - Queen Elizabeth's visit to Japanese war dead shrine cancelled.: A plan for Queen Elizabeth to visit Yasukuni, Shrine in Tokyo during her official visit to Japan next May, has been cancelled because of objections from religious groups. The shrine in Tokyo's Chiyoda Ward is consecrated to Japan's war dead since the Meiji Restoration, and houses the bones of Japanese soldiers collected from battlefields. Another religious group, including the National Christian Council, is also objecting to the Queen's visit to the Ise Grand Shrine which is dedicated to Amaterasu Omikami (Sun Goddess) and which is the ancestral mausoleum of the Imperial Family of Japan.
