Aug. 08, 1966 - Forty four Year Old WRAF Becomes the Oldest Member to be Awarded the Sash of Merit. 44 year old Flying Officer Catherine Dorothy Hambridge of The WRAF become the oldest woman to be awarded the Sash of Merit at a passing out parade for officers. She was presented with the Sash yesterday at Healow, Bedfordshire, at the first officer graduation parade to take place there. Flying Officer Hambidge, B.E.M. was competing against seven other officer cadets who were all much younger, she joined the WRAF in 1940 as telephonist leaving as a sargeant in 1946 - a year later she rejoined.
