Captain Leslie Cheape playing polo against America, 1914

Captain Leslie St. Clair Cheape (1882-1916), British soldier and polo player dubbed, England's greatest polo player pictured playing his part in the England victory over America in the International Polo Trophy match (Westchester Cup) in June 1914. Cheape played despite sustaining a nasty cartilage injury to his nose in a practice game, and receiving the news that his sister had drowned in the Empress of Ireland disaster. Accounts relate that he gave a display of first class polo and became the benchmark of excellence in the game in subsequent years. He was killed on 23 April 1916 while commanding a squadron of the Worcestershire Yeomanry
