Charles Martin, collier artist
Charles Martin, a working miner from Dinnington Colliery who was also a successful artist, having painted in oils 270 pictures, many of which he had sold. The Duchess of Portland had bought one of his pictures. He began sketching at the age of twelve and finally took lessons aged twenty from a local art master. Many fellow colliery workers commissioned him to paint pictures
