The Bystander magazine, part of the Illustrated London News archive at Mary Evans Picture Library, was a weekly illustrated magazine which ran from 1903 to 1940, when it merged with The Tatler. It covered sport, politics, society, royalty, fashion, motoring, travel and general gossip and was well-known for its rich tradition of illustration and humorous cartoons. Particularly well-known were the cartoons of Captain Bruce Bairnsfather who found fame during the First World War with his cartoons featuring his curmudgeonly soldier character, Ole Bill.
