Ratting: The New Sport in the Trenches. British soldiers follow a terrier as it dashes along a trench on the Western Front in pursuit of a rat. The War Budget, in which this illustration was published, writes that rewards were offered for the capture of rats and in one single fortnight, one army corps alone disposed of 8000 rats, some indication of the scale of the vermin problem in the trenches
