A small girl presents a pair of mis-shapen hand knitted khaki socks to a soldier and expresses the hope that they fit. He doesn't look convinced. The outbreak of the First World War led to an outbreak of knitting needles as men, women and children on the home front set about furiously knitting comforts for the troops
