Patrick Maynard Stuart Blackett, Baron Blackett (1897-1974) - British experimental physicist and life peer. The first person (in 1925) to prove that radioactivity could cause the nuclear transmutation of one chemical element to another. He also made major contributions to the Allied war effort in WW2, advising on military strategy and developing operational research. Recipient of the 1948 Nobel Prize for Physics
