Bottle kilns, the Potteries, Staffordshire
A row of bottle kilns at the side of a canal in the Potteries, Staffordshire. Dating from the 18th century, there were at one time over 4000 of these kilns all over the Staffordshire area, and 2000 still standing in the 1950s. Many were demolished as a result of the Clean Air Acts (1956 and 1968) -- there are just 47 left standing today, all of them listed buildings
