Youlten's Mafeking Observation Hyposcope
Youlten's Mafeking Observation Hyposcope, made by A.E. Bentley Manchester England, circa 1911. Made from tin, it featured two mirrors on opposing sides which reflected the image from the top to the bottom. Hyposcopes - or periscopes - were used in various conflicts, Mafeking included, and to great effect during WWI. However, this particular item was probably used by crowds at state ceremonial occasions e.g. coronations, to see over heads of people in front of them. Cardboard versions are sold today for similar occasions
