John Bull or You Don't Bamboozle - music hall song of 1862 by W. F. and Willem Vandervell. The character was a very popular symbol of the traditional Englishman. "And stop the talk how they [the French] could walk/Into our little isle/With our Rifle Corps to guard our shores/How it makes me smile"
