Buckfast Abbey, Devon
Buckfast Abbey at Buckfastleigh in Devon, with lavender beds in the foreground. The Abbey is an active Benedictine monastery, founded by Earl Aylward in the reign of King Cnut in 1018. After the dissolution of the monasteries in the 16th century the abbey stood empty and in ruins for over 200 years, but was gradually rebuilt during the 19th and 20th centuries
