Clifford's Tower, part of York Castle, Yorkshire. There was formerly a wooden keep on this site which was burnt down during a siege when members of the Jewish community had taken refuge there. In the late 13th century the keep was rebuilt in stone, with a quatrefoil plan. It became known as Clifford's Tower after Roger de Clifford, who was hanged there in 1322
