Anthony Wilding in Paris, 1915

Photograph of New Zealand tennis player, Anthony Frederick Wilding, Wimbledon Mens Champion from 1910 until it came to an end in 1914 when he was beaten by Australian, N E Brookes in three straight sets. Photographed as a Lieutenant during World War One, taken in the Place Vendome, Paris during a short leave behind the wheel of his car (he was an expert motorist). He was attached to the Royal Naval Air Service. Wilding died near Neuve Chapelle in May 1915 at the Battle of Aubers Ridge
