Bedford House, Bloomsbury Square
North front of Bedford House, Bloomsbury Square, London, c.1800. This mansion, which for more than a century was the residence of the noble family of Russel [Russell], Earls and Dukes of Bedford, was built under the direction of Inigo Jones on the site of an ancient mansion called Southampton House. In the year 1800 Bedford House was taken down and upon the site of the house and gardens a number of large houses called Bedford Place and Montague Street were erected by Francis Russell, 5th Duke of Bedford.
