El Cid, Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar, Castilian nobleman

Illustration from the life of El Cid, Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar (c1043-1099), Castilian nobleman and military leader in medieval Spain - going into exile after administering the oath to the new king, Alfonso, having displeased the king. He was immortalised in a 12th century Spanish epic poem, El Cantar de Mio Cid, and is the subject of a play by Pierre Corneille, an opera by Jules Massenet, and a film starring Charlton Heston
