El Cid, Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar, Castilian nobleman

Illustrations from the life of El Cid, Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar (c1043-1099), Castilian nobleman and military leader in medieval Spain - with Ximena and her daughters; defeating the Moors before Valencia. He was immortalised in a 12th century Spanish epic poem, El Cantar de Mio Cid, and is the subject of a play by Pierre Corneille, an opera by Jules Massenet, and a film starring Charlton Heston
