El Cid, Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar, Castilian nobleman
Illustration from the life of El Cid, Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar (c1043 - 1099), Castilian nobleman and military leader in medieval Spain - his tomb, with effigies, in the monastery of San Pedro de Cardena, Castile, Spain (his remains were later transferred to Burgos Cathedral). He was immortalised in a 12th century Spanish epic poem, El Cantar de Mio Cid, and is the subject of a play by Pierre Corneille, an opera by Jules Massenet, and a film starring Charlton Heston
