Georges Cuvier (Jean Leopold Nicolas Frederic Cuvier), (1769 - 1832), French naturalist and zoologist, founder of comparative anatomy and palaeontology. In 1819 he was raised to the aristocracy for his contribution to science, and became known as Baron Cuvier. Seen here examining fossils with a colleague
