Hardwicke House from the river

Hardwicke House, belonging to Mrs. Rose, one of the desirable residences along the River Thames, where Charles I once played bowls on its smooth lawns. Hardwick House is a Grade I listed Tudor house at Whitchurch-on-Thames in Oxfordshire. It was visited by Charles I while he was a prisoner escorted from Oxford, and is often claimed to be the inspiration for E.H. Shepherd's illustrations of Toad Hall in Kenneth Grahame's Wind in the Willows
