Henry Dymoke, the King's Champion, George IV coronation
Henry Dymoke, in armour and on horseback as the King's Champion at the coronation of George IV on 19 July 1821. The King's Champion was one of the positions that could be claimed, in serving the sovereign during the ceremony. The King's Champion would ride into Westminster Hall and throw down a glove or gauntlet to challenge any of the monarch's enemies (there usually weren't any!). George IV's coronation was the last to include the King's Champion, but the Dymokes continued to take part in coronations; most recently an ancestor of Henry Dymoke carried the royal standard at the 1953 coronation
