The ill-fated Amphion, blown up at the start of WWI
On 6th August the cruiser, Amphion, was returning to Harwich after sinking the German mine-layer Konigin Luise. The cruiser struck a mine, 30 miles off Aldeburg and was immediately blown up. Her bow was shattered and in less than 20 minutes she sank, with a loss of 131 lives, including German prisoners confined in the forepart of the ship
