L Illustration cover - Directoire gowns at Longchamp
The sensational sight of three models wearing a new style of revealing gown in the Prix de Prince de Galles at Longchamp racecourse in May 1908. The dresses, in the directoire style were designed by Jeanne Margraine-Lacroix, renowned for a new elasticised corset which dispensed with boning. Their diaphanous fabric made no secret that the wearer was without corsets or underwear underneath. The fluid style was said to usher in the new, more slender silhouette of the twentieth century
