Peter Lobengula and Miss Florence (Kitty) Jewell
Portraits of Florence K. Jewell, generally known as Katie or Kitty Jewell, and Peter Kushana Lobengula, who claimed to be the son of King Lobengula of Matabeleland. Peter was one of the performers in Savage South Africa - a show featuring 200 Africans and 6 elephants at the Empress Theatre, Earl's Court. The pictures accompanied speculation that the pair were to be married, but at this point, an attempt had failed after the curate refused to carry out the ceremony. The pair's story was a sensation and reported widely in the press. They eventually married but then divorced. Peter then married an Irish woman and had several children, ending up working as a miner and living in Salford
