Pyrrhus, King of Epirus and Macedon, fighting the Romans at the Battle of Asculum (or Ausculum), in his bid to defend the Greek city of Taranto (Tarentum) in southern Italy. Pyrrhus won the battle, but lost many men, hence the term Pyrrhic victory
