Rye House, near Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire, is notorious as the scene of the Rye House Plot, 1683, wherein a bunch of extremists planned to murder Charles II and his brother, the Duke of York, for their Roman Catholic leanings. The plot was betrayed, and several of the alleged conspirators, including Lord William Russell, were executed
