Therese Humbert (1856-1918), a French fraudster who pretended to be heir to an imaginary American millionaire named Robert Crawford, on the strength of which she borrowed large sums of money. Under suspicion of swindling, she faces the Juge d'Instruction at Paris, but refuses to answer his questions. She was eventually tried, and sentenced to five years hard labour
