Unusual Competitions - tug of war with a elephant 1897

Taking place during the night, one hundred and fifty men pulling against an elephant, weighing four tons. for a barrel of beer, which they won even if they lost. The task was to pull the huge elephant over the chalk line, with a rope, like tug-of-war. Finding that they were losing, they twisted the rope a few times around one of the stout wooden beams that supported the building. The hefty animal moved forward with great strength breaking the beam with half the roof collapsing
