WW1 - Sinking of the Italian emigrant ship SS Ancona, 1915
WW1 - The Italian passenger ship SS Ancona was torpedoed and sunk without warning by SM U-38 off Cape Carbonara in the Mediterranean on 7th November 1915. The u-boat was flying the flag of Austria-Hungary as the German Empire was not yet at war with Italy. The enemy fired upon the small boats pulling away from the torpedoed ship. 176 persons, mostly women and children were lost
