Gordon McLennan, communist and political activist
Gordon McLennan (1924-2011), former leader of the Communist Party of Great Britain, its National Organiser 1966-1975 and its General Secretary 1976-1989. When the CPGB was dissolved in 1991 he joined the Communist Party of Scotland. Seen here on a London street, taking part in a campaign to stop the execution of Solomon Mahlangu, an ANC member wrongfully accused of murder and terrorism in 1977 by the apartheid government of South Africa. The campaign was unsuccessful, and Mahlangu was hanged in 1979
