Linus Carl Pauling (1901-1994), American chemist, peace activist, author and educator, winner of two Nobel Prizes, one for Chemistry in 1954 and one for Peace in 1962. Seen here with his wife, Ava Helen Pauling, nee Miller (1903-1981), herself an American human rights activist, particularly in the areas of women's rights, racial equality and international peace. The couple married in 1923
