Makarios III, Archbishop of Cyprus (born Michail Christodolou Mouskos, 1913-1977). He was archbishop and primate of the autocephalous Cypriot Orthodox Church (1950-1977) and first President of the Republic of Cyprus (1960-1974 and 1974-1977). Seen here sitting at his desk. He took presidential office on 16 August 1960, the day when Cyprus signed the independence agreement, ending British rule. ~~
