Lady Smith-Dorrien examining gifts of lace
Lady Smith-Dorrien examing a gift of lace at the Royal School of Needlework. During World War II, people were encouraged to donate their treasured pieces of family lace for conversion into dollars through the British War Relief, to pay for war materials and to benefit the Officers Families Fund. The scheme was originated by Mrs Charles Aschan, and was supported by Lady Smith-Dorrien (President of the Royal School of Needlework) who suggested that all donations be sent to the school for cleaning and repair and from there to America
