Mrs Charles Fellowes-Gordon with donated lace
Mrs Charles Fellowes-Gordon, formerly Sarah P. Collier of New York and wife of Commander Charles Fellowes-Gordon, DSC, in charge of the London Auxiliary Ambulance Station, working for American Red Cross in Great Britain and co-operated in the scheme for sending lace to America, pictured here with a length of beautiful lace. During World War II, people were encouraged to donate their treasured pieces of family lace for conversion into dollars through the British War Relief, to pay for war materials and to benefit the Officers Families Fund. The scheme was originated by Mrs Charles Aschan, and was supported by Lady Smith-Dorrien (President of the Royal School of Needlework) who suggested that all donations be sent to the school for cleaning and repair and from there to America
