The Leavesden/Caterham administrative block plan, 1868. The asylums were established by the Metropolitan Asylums Board to provide care for London's sick poor suffering from mental conditions such as epilepsy and severe learning difficulties. The design for these twin institutions was essentially identical, although was adapted for local differences in the two sites. In 1941, the Caterham asylum became known as St Lawrence's Hospital, and continued to provide care for the mentally handicapped
