William Hennen, 94, and Fanny Wadhams, 80, who married after leaving the Medway Union workhouse, Chatham, where they had fallen in love while inmates. A number of such matches followed the introduction of the old-age pension which offered the possibility of independent living to some of the elderly for whom previously the workhouse would have been the only option
