Market Day at the Training Ship Mercury - boys spend their small weekly allowance in the institution's shop, with bags of sweets apparently popular. The ship and its shore establishment were based on the River Hamble near Southampton. Boys aged 12-15 were trained in seamanship, with many going on to join the naval services
