Union Workhouse, Hastings, Sussex
Bird's eye view of the new Hastings workhouse, opened in 1903 on Frederick Road (bottom right of picture) opposite the original 1837 workhouse. The new workhouse chapel stands at the left. The site, which later became St Helen's Hospital, is associated with the novelist Catherine Cookson who became the institution's head laundress in 1929
