William Varney, monumental mason, age 77, at work on a headstone. Based in south-west London, Mr Varney was frequently called out of retirement because of the lack of skilled craftspeople. He was apprenticed at the age of 14, became a master craftsman at the age of 17, was supervising hundreds of craftspeople by the age of 26, and worked throughout the UK, including among his employers Sir Edwin Lutyens
