At night on 19 July 1846, on the road between Bell-lloc and Els Alamus, near Tossal de la Moradilla, eight armed bandits assaulted the stagecoach-courier that was coming from the Hostal de les Soques de Bellpuig, an important inn. The stagecoach was carrying the former Member of Parliament Francesc Perpinya i Massot, who was kidnapped to demand a ransom for his liberation. The bandits started a journey on foot through the Lleida plain to take him to a place where they could keep him hidden. On 27 July 1846, Perpinya's body was found in a well near Margalef. Jaume Banque Bas, known as Lo Parrot, a bandit leader who was believed to have participated in the kidnapping of Francesc Perpinya, was condemned to death and executed for this act. Kidnapping of Don Francisco Perpinya. Engraving. Historia de las Escuadras de Cataluna, 1876
