Gunther Billing executed
American military police tie the hands of Gunther Billing in preparation for his execution by firing squad. Billing and two others were executed on 23 December 1944 for espionage during the German counter-offensive in the Ardennes that became known as the Battle of the Bulge. They, and other German soldiers under the S.S. command of Otto Skorzeny, had dressed in American uniform in order to capture bridges and generally cause confusion behind Allied lines
