Mark I tank
A Mark I tank which had broken down as it crossed a British trench on the way to attack Thiepval. The Mark I was the world's first combat tank, and had been introduced to battle for the first time on 15 September 1916. On top of the tank can be seen the mesh added for the purpose of deflecting enemy grenades. The wheel at the rear of the tank was not included on later models
