Dressing shop, Penyrorsedd Slate Quarry, North Wales
A workman in the slate dressing shop at Penyrorsedd Slate Quarry, Nantlle Valley, Caernarvonshire (now Gwynedd), North Wales. The cage hides a pair of rotating steel blades which bite off the rough edges of the slates and square them off. Marks on the side of the dresser machine indicate the various standard sizes of the slate, with quaint names such as Ladies, Duchesses and Countesses
