Two quarrymen at Penyrorsedd Slate Quarry, Nantlle Valley, Caernarvonshire (now Gwynedd), North Wales. The youngest member of the quarrying team watches the oldest to make sure that the chain in secure around a two-ton piece of slate before it begins its 360 foot climb from the bottom of the slate pit. The rock face in the background shows where rectangular blocks of slate have been cut away
