Scouts during Wartime

Assistant Scoutmaster Heroes Rewarded. Assistant Scoutmasters N.J. Petts and J.W. Livesey of the 2nd Uxbridge Group have been awarded the Gilt Cross for gallantry. The award is made in recognition of their complete disregard for their own safety when rescuing a man trapped in a bombed house. Cries were heard from the debris when the A.R.P. Party arrived, and Petts and Livesey immediately commenced to tunnel with their hands in the direction of the voice. Eventually they managed to crawl inside supporting the wreckage with broken timbers and on reaching the injured man began to hollow out the debris beneath him. As the space above the man's head was only a few inches, the work had to be carried out in a prone position, and escaping gas added to the danger of a very difficult rescue.
