Abyssinian Flying Squadron, 1935
The first African Flying Squadron, here parading before their leader Walter Crumbley. On the left there is a female soldier, Lola Jackson, which was very unusual at that time. In early 1935, the Flying Squadron prepared regularly at Roosevelt Airfield near New York to fight for the independence of the last African empire in a possible war against Italy. The members of the squadron were African Americans living in the New York district of Harlem
