At the end of June 1940 Hitler visits the fortifications of the Maginot Line, accompanied by (from left to right): Martin Bormann, Field Marshal Keitel, State Secretary Lammers, Heinrich Himmler. During the Western Campaign, which began on May 10, 1940, Colonel General Ritter von Leeb and Army Group C raided the Maginot Line in June 1940. After the capitulation of France, Leeb was promoted to the rank of Field Marshal on July 19, 1940. He had already been awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross on June 24, 1940
